September 18 - 24, 2011
Massachusetts joins over 1,000 cities in 40 countries globally to celebrate World Car-Free Day on September 22. World Car-Free Day began in Europe and has spread around the world as a way to promote the environmental, financial, community, and health benefits of using public transportation, carpooling, bicycling, walking, and teleworking.
This year, The Merrimack Valley TMA is joining with MassCommute and MassDOT to celebrate all week (September 18 – 24, 2011) by sponsoring an online promotion that includes the opportunity for people who commute Car-Free to win great prizes.

- Bike to Work Week 2011/Mass Commuter Challenge
was a Huge Success – Thank you Cyclists!
Close to 3500 people participated in this year’s MassCommuter Challenge. MVTMA member company Philips won 1st prize in the MassCommuter Challenge for their category – businesses with 1500 to 3000 employees and Enterasys Networks won 3rd prize in the new category – Highest Average Commuting Mileage Per Team. Congratulations to both Enterasys Networks and Philips who received awards!
Over 100 MVTMA member employees participated in this year’s events with approximately 5,099 miles pledged during the MVTMA’s Bike to Work (BtW) week. Considering an average automobile fuel economy of 25 miles per gallon, cyclists saved approximately 204 gallons of gasoline, and just over $785 in fuel costs ($3.85 average cost per gallon) during BtW Week.

- The 93 Fast 14 Project
ALL 14 BRIDGE SUPERSTRUCTURES COMPLETE!
This historic project replaced 14 bridges in Medford in just 10 weekends between June and August, 2011. Between now and the end-of-the year MassDOT will be performing some associated work, such as barrier installation, final paving, and lane striping, that will occur during off-peak and overnight hours on I-93 Northbound and Southbound.

- Dascomb Road Park & Ride Re-opens Sept. 10th
The Dascomb Road – Andover/Tewksbury Park and Ride lot, which was closed in February for a reconstruction project, reopens Friday, September 10 ahead of schedule. The closure had originally been scheduled for as long as 12 months. Message boards along Interstate 93 near the Park and Ride lot will announce the reopening.
